AVChat 2 and AVConference are compatible with both FMS 2 & 3 and Red5 .
These are the requirements for any AVChat application:
1. Web Server to put the files on:
Some hosting space with PHP or ASP installed will do just fine.
This is the place where most of the files (.html .swf .xml etc...) will go and most probably where your web site is located. It can be your own dedicated web server or a shared hosting plan.
2. Flash Media Server (2 or 3) or Red5
This server takes care of all the video, audio and text data exchanged between the users. Here are your options:
Option A- free: Download the free Flash Media Development Server from Adobe and install it on a dedicated server:
You need to download the FMDS from Adobe's web site, install it on your dedicated server, run it, and then configure the AVChat software to connect to it. With the free Flash Media Development Server you get unlimited audio/video bandwidth but only 10 simultaneous connections.
Check out: Download FMDS page, FMS product page, FMS pricing and editions page, on adobe.com
Flash Media Server can be installed on servers running most flavours of Windows and Linux but only these versions of the operating systems are officially supported.
Option B - costs money: Buy Flash Media Server Hosting from one of the available providers, the entry price is around $10/month:
We recommend using:
- Influxis (USA, California)
- MoreMx (Germany)
- Uvault (USA, Florida)
- FlashHosting (Holland)
- FlashComHosting.ca (Canada)
- FirstServ (UK)
- Streammedia (France)
The deciding factor must be how close your users are to them. Uvault, Influxis and MoreMx have servers in both N. America and Europe.
Note: If you go with FMS hosting you don't have to move your entire web site. The FMS Hosting will only take care of the video, audio, and text data sent between the users connected to it!
Option C - costs money: Buy the Flash Media Interactive Server (FMS3) from Adobe and install it on a dedicated server, the entry price is $4500/license:
You can buy FMIS directly from Adobe and install it on your own server. We recommend it for web sites that already have experience with Flash Media Server Hosting. Check out: FMIS product page, FMS 3 pricing and editions page, on adobe.com.
Note: Flash Communication Server (1.5) adn FMS2 are not available any more for purchase.
Option D - free: Download the open source Red5 server and install it on your own dedicated server:
Red5 is a free open source media server developed in Java. if you have a dedicated server somewhere you can download Red5 from http://osflash.org/red5 and install it. Windows and Linux and Mac OS versions are available.
If you do not have a dedicated server yet, you can buy one with Red5 pre installed from hosttv.com .
More info and installation instructions on the official page here: http://osflash.org/red5 .
Note: Red5 can not be installed on a shared hosting plan.
3. End user requirements :
An internet browser with Flash Player 8 or above installed. Nothing else! And it looks like at least 95% of the internet users already have Flash Player 8 installed.
